Does facebook fan-gating hurt facebook engagement?

Fan-gating or Like-gating is the practice of displaying certain content only to users who Like your Facebook page. It’s an increasingly common practice and something I discuss with clients almost daily. But is it a good idea? What is Fan-Gating? Fan-gating is accomplished by creating two versions of a tab on your page—one that’s shown to users who already Like your page and one to those who have not Liked the page. How to use the new facebook to see who unfriends you

Facebook Timeline is pretty spectacular, giving a panoramic view of achievements, love, birth, death, and a lot of binge drinking photos. But what else does it provide? A window into social treachery: a list of those who’ve unfriended you. It’s extremely easy. First, get Timeline early. Then scroll down to a particular year of your life. Say, 2010. In that year, I made 51 friends, Facebook tells me (that’s it?!). I can click that number and see a list. Great! I’m still friends with almost all of them, which Timeline notes. Aw. Why facebook works for all, twitter for some

It finally makes sense to me. On Friday evening I was in Los Angeles visiting my sister. We were at a restaurant, chatting away about life, when my sister ebulliently announced that she wanted to “Tweet about our meal.” She pulled out her iPhone, opened up the Twitter application and then proceeded to click around aimlessly trying to figure out how to send a new Twitter message. I quickly turned into a scientist in a lab and sat inquisitively watching her navigate Twitter. I didn’t offer any guidance, although she clearly needed it. I should note that my sister is not technologically inept. She has the typical digital toolbox of modern gadgets at her disposal: iPhone, iPad, laptop, digital camera. Like everyone else in my family, she is also a religious Facebook user, uploading … Continue reading

Facebook’s mobile chief: within 1-2 years, we’re going to be a mobile company

Facebook has their sights locked on mobile. We know that. This afternoon at GigaOm’s Mobilize conference, Facebook Mobile Chief Erick Tseng touched on just how crucial mobile is to them — and more importantly, how crucial it will be. Just how crucial are we talking about? Within 1-2 years, Tseng sees Facebook becoming as much of a mobile company as it is a desktop/web company.“It’s interesting that if you take a look at our top line of growth, we’re getting to the point that the countries we’re getting into now are ones that don’t really use computers at all. The predominant ways people are connecting in Africa, in India, is through their mobile devices. As Mark touched on a few days ago, we now have over 350 million mobile … Continue reading

4 successful and creative facebook contests

Years ago, if a marketer wanted to run a contest, he’d have to run print ads and hope that people would take the time to fill out an entry form and then mail it in. The Internet made things easier, but you still assumed that consumers would somehow find their way to your website. Facebook adds another layer of ease to the process: Consumers are already there doing something else. If the promotion looks interesting enough, filling out an online form isn’t that big a deal. Rodney Mason, the chief marketing officer of promotions agency Moosylvania, says Facebook-only promotions have a lot of advantages. “One would be the ease of use,” he says. “You can also connect with people who’ve already opted in for past promotions, and everybody’s on … Continue reading

Why Facebook will destroy LinkedIn

The Wall Street Journal recently published a story by Joe Light that highlighted certain employers, such as Waste Management, finding more recruitment success on Facebook than on LinkedIn. “Facebook hires account for less than 1% of the total hires companies are making,” Light noted, quoting Jobs2Web’s recent analysis. “But if current growth trends continue, Facebook could rival traditional job boards in 2012.” But it isn’t just the job boards that should be worried. Facebook will destroy LinkedIn, too. Here’s why… Read more By Jody Ordioni for ere net, 16 August 2011.

Facebook checks out of check-ins, but not location

For years, privacy issues have dogged the world’s largest social network, Facebook.
